Chem-Film coating, also known as Alodine or Iridite, is a chromate conversion process for aluminum. It produces a protective film on the surface that prevents corrosion while maintaining electrical conductivity. This is a significant advantage over anodizing, which is an insulator.
At AGS, we utilize both Type I (containing hexavalent chromium) and Type II (trivalent chromium, RoHS compliant). The process involves immersion in a chemical bath that reacts with the aluminum to form an iridescent gold or clear finish.
It provides an excellent base for paint adhesion, making it a standard choice for aerospace enclosures and electronic chassis. The coating meets MIL-DTL-5541 standards, providing up to 168 hours of salt spray resistance. It is often used on grounding surfaces and EMI shielding components where low contact resistance is mandatory.
